In 2015, Nuclear Throne was hailed as a “crowning achievement for Vlambeer” and recognized as one of the finest action-roguelikes ever created, earning a commendable 90% in our review. Fast forward to 2022, and it still held the title of the best roguelike in the gaming landscape. Now, in 2025, after an eight-year hiatus from updates, this beloved title has made a triumphant return.
Exciting Updates for Fans
In a delightful surprise announcement on Bluesky, Vlambeer shared the news that an updated beta build is now available on Steam. This new version brings a host of quality-of-life enhancements, including:
- 120fps support
- Various aspect ratios
- A revamped controls menu
Additionally, players can look forward to a quirky new melting loading screen tip, adding a touch of humor to the experience.
The studio’s journey has been anything but straightforward. After closing its doors, not due to any discord between co-founders Rami Ismail and Jan Nijman, but rather as a natural progression in their careers, Vlambeer took a four-year hiatus. Upon its return, however, Ismail had sold his share to Nijman, who seems eager to revisit the roots of their success.
In a separate post, Vlambeer expressed a desire to extend the new update to console versions of Nuclear Throne, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a solid experience on PC first. For those eager to dive into the new Steam beta, the process is simple: right-click on Nuclear Throne in your Steam library, select “Properties,” navigate to “Betas,” and choose “openbeta_win64” from the dropdown menu. After a quick update, players can immerse themselves in the silky smooth gameplay that awaits.
