For those utilizing OBS for streaming, particularly when connecting multiple PCs, recent reports indicate a troubling trend of “severe stuttering, lag, and choppy audio/video.” This issue has been highlighted in the latest Windows 11 Version 24H2 update, specifically OS build 26100.4946, released on August 12. Many streamers have taken to forums, such as the VideoEngineering Subreddit, to voice their frustrations over ‘sudden lag and framedrops’ affecting their NDI streams.
Temporary Solutions Amidst Technical Challenges
The disruption caused by the latest Windows update has compelled some streamers to rethink their setups until a permanent solution is implemented. Fortunately, a temporary workaround has been suggested. NDI recommends adjusting the NDI Receive Mode to utilize either TCP or UDP instead of the default RUDP. To implement this fix, users can download and install the NDI Tools pack, launch it, and navigate to the advanced tab to make the necessary adjustments. It is essential to apply this change on both computers if streaming between them.
RUDP, or Reliable User Datagram Protocol, is favored for its speed and low latency, making it the optimal choice for streaming. It strikes a balance between the higher quality of TCP and the consistency of UDP. While the temporary fix should stabilize streams, users can expect an even smoother experience once RUDP is restored.
Microsoft is currently investigating the matter, with further updates anticipated in the near future, providing hope for a resolution that will restore the seamless streaming experience many have come to rely on.
