Danish game developer IO Interactive finds itself at a crossroads following the challenging launch of MindsEye. In a recent conversation with IGN, CEO Hakan Abrak candidly reflected on the difficulties encountered with the debut title from Build A Rocket Boy, describing the reception as “tough.” This admission raises questions about the future of IO Interactive’s publishing endeavors under its own label, IO Partners.
Reflections on a Challenging Launch
Abrak shared his thoughts on the situation, stating, “Well, that was definitely tough, right? It was a tough reception. It wasn’t what they hoped for, and also what we didn’t hope for at IOI Partners.” The CEO emphasized the studio’s commitment to regaining the trust of gamers, noting that they are diligently working on turning the situation around. “They have tons of potential and content they’re working on. So hopefully they’ll succeed with that in the future,” he added.
As the conversation shifted to the future of IO Interactive’s publishing strategy, Abrak remained noncommittal. “IO Interactive will publish our own games internally. IOI Partners? That remains to be seen,” he remarked, leaving the door open for possibilities while acknowledging the uncertainty that lies ahead.
The launch of MindsEye in June was met with disappointment, as the studio expressed feeling “heartbroken” by the game’s initial state. This rocky start has led to the unfortunate news of impending layoffs within the company, further complicating the landscape for IO Interactive as it navigates these turbulent waters.
