Microsoft Fixes Long-Standing Bug in Windows 11
Windows 11 June 2024 cumulative update brings a new Microsoft account manager in the Start menu and fixes visual distortions when playing videos in Chromium-based browsers.
In our tests, Windows Latest found that this month’s update (KB5039212) resolves visual distortions (checkerboard) experienced when playing videos in Chrome or Edge.
Users with Nvidia graphics may have noticed visual distortions or poor video playback performance in Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This issue is likely related to Chromium’s power management.
One user mentioned experiencing checkerboard visual artifacts on Windows 11 PCs with GPUs like RTX 4070. Some users were able to fix the issue by setting “Prefer maximum performance” in the Nvidia Control Panel, although this led to increased power usage.
The bug seems to be limited to specific hardware or use cases. One affected user noted that the bug didn’t appear on their rig with a 12900k/4090 after disabling ASPM in the BIOS and setting power management to ‘high performance’ with tweaks.
Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge have been facing the checkerboard issue for several months now. Reports of the issue date back almost a year, affecting Windows PCs without Nvidia graphics in some rare cases.
The Windows 11 KB5039212 update has finally addressed the bug, as confirmed by users. Microsoft has acknowledged the fixes in a support document, stating that the update resolves screen distortion when using a Chromium-based browser to play a video.
While the specifics of how Microsoft resolved the performance issues with Chromium remain unknown, it is clear that this was a problem that only Microsoft could address by making changes to Windows 11.
