One of the few games I’ve scored 9/10 is currently free, but it’s not for the faint of heart

Night City stands as a testament to the complexities of a virtual world, where the brilliance of cutting-edge technology starkly contrasts with the harsh realities of poverty. In this neon-lit cyberpunk landscape, the narrative often overlooks the underlying struggles that fuel these dystopian environments: the prosperity of the affluent is intricately tied to the plight of the less fortunate. While Cyberpunk 2077 has captured the imagination of many, another title, Ghostrunner 2 from One More Level, emerges as a fresh evolution of this enduring theme.

Exploring the Streets of Dharma

Currently featured in this week’s free offerings from Epic Games, Ghostrunner 2 plunges players back into the chaotic streets of Dharma. This sequel expands the universe beyond the confines of the original game’s Dhamra Tower, inviting players to navigate the city’s intricate back alleys. As Jack, the last of the Ghostrunners and a formidable combat android, your mission is to dismantle a newly risen AI cult. However, be warned: the challenge is steep, as a single hit can spell your demise.

Unlike its predecessor, which followed a more linear path reminiscent of a Judge Dredd narrative, the sequel introduces a more expansive world. Players can now explore a central hub zone, interact with captivating NPCs, and engage in vehicular combat, fulfilling those long-held dreams of racing through a cyberpunk landscape on a motorbike.

The gameplay retains the essence of its predecessor while introducing an array of innovative gadgets. Players will wield an upgradable katana for most of the hacking and slashing, but they can also utilize a revamped shuriken system and a grapple gun, enabling swift movement across rooftops.

A Soundtrack That Resonates

The soundtrack of Ghostrunner 2 deserves special mention. With a rich tapestry of electronic music ranging from pulsating bass and hard electro to soothing low-fi melodies, the score enhances the gaming experience significantly. It’s a collection that stands out, making the game appealing even to those who might not typically gravitate toward action titles.

In my review, I awarded Ghostrunner 2 a commendable 9/10, dubbing it a “surprise GOTY contender.” The exhilarating Rahu boss fight remains one of the most memorable experiences I’ve encountered, and the combat mechanics are refreshingly unique. If you’re considering a free PC game to try today, make it Ghostrunner 2.

Other Free Offerings

Jack’s relentless journey is not the only highlight on the Epic Games Store this week. Joining the lineup is the beautifully animated puzzle game Monument Valley 2, which follows the success of its predecessor’s free offering last week. Additionally, the charming Battle of Polytopia adds a delightful twist to the turn-based strategy genre.

Ghostrunner 2, Monument Valley 2, and The Battle of Polytopia are available for free on the Epic Games Store, with the promotion concluding at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT / 5pm CEST on Thursday, September 18. You can access these titles through the Epic Games Store.

Curious about future developments? The creators of Ghostrunner are also working on a soulslike game titled Valor Mortis. Keep an eye out for previews and updates. In the meantime, if you’re seeking new gaming experiences, we have curated a list of the best PC games available.
