Microsoft lifts Windows 11 update block after face detection fix

Microsoft has recently lifted a compatibility hold that had previously hindered devices equipped with integrated cameras from upgrading to Windows 11 24H2. This hold was instituted due to a face detection bug that resulted in app freezes, particularly affecting the Camera app, Windows Hello facial recognition sign-in, and other applications reliant on the integrated camera.

Resolution of Compatibility Issues

In a statement made nearly a year ago, in October 2024, Microsoft acknowledged the challenges faced by certain devices post-installation of Windows 11, version 24H2. The company noted that issues arose when object or face detection features were activated, leading to significant user frustration.

The update block, identified by safeguard ID: 53340062, was initially put in place to protect customers from experiencing these compatibility issues. However, with the recent resolution of the underlying bug, Microsoft has now enabled eligible devices, free of other safeguard holds, to proceed with the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2 through the Windows Update release channel. Users are advised that it may take up to 48 hours for the update to become available, and a device restart could expedite this process.

In their update on the Windows release health dashboard, Microsoft emphasized the importance of installing the latest security updates, which encompass vital improvements and resolutions to various issues, including the aforementioned camera bug.

Just a week prior, Microsoft had also removed another safeguard hold that was obstructing upgrades to Windows 11 24H2, which had been causing malfunctions with Bluetooth headsets and speakers. While several compatibility holds have been lifted since the beginning of the year, certain blocks remain in place for devices utilizing wallpaper customization software, incompatible Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers, and SenseShield Technology code-obfuscation drivers.

Windows 11 24H2 was officially launched in October 2024 for devices already running Windows 11 22H2/23H2, following an initial rollout aimed at enterprise customers in May 2024 as part of the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel.
