I just retested the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K, and it’s no longer a complete lemon

In a surprising turn of events, Intel’s Arrow Lake gaming CPU lineup, particularly the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K, has undergone a significant transformation since its initial release at the end of 2024. Initially criticized for its lackluster gaming performance, the 265K has since received a series of updates, including BIOS enhancements, driver updates, and the introduction of the new 200S Boost mode. This prompted a fresh evaluation to determine whether the CPU could redeem itself in the competitive gaming landscape.

While it may not dethrone the top contenders in every category, the 265K has shown marked improvement. In fact, it now competes more effectively against its rivals, boasting commendable productivity performance alongside its gaming capabilities. To ensure consistency in testing, the 265K was re-evaluated on the same benchmark setup as the original review, utilizing an Asus TUF Z890-Plus WiFi motherboard, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 GPU, 32GB of G.Skill TridentZ 6,000MT/s CL28 RAM, and a WD Black SN850X SSD with the same Windows installation. The only changes made were updates to the motherboard BIOS, Intel Management Engine, Windows, and drivers.

Cinebench

The first notable improvement was observed in Cinebench, particularly in single-threaded performance. The 265K’s score has risen from 117 to 136, surpassing even the Core i9 14900K. When the 200S Boost mode is activated, the score reaches 138, outperforming the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D. This is a remarkable achievement for the CPU.

In multi-core performance, the Cinebench R24 score improved from 1,995 to 2,045, and with 200S Boost enabled, it reaches 2,056. This positions the 265K ahead of the previous generation 16-core AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D and brings it closer to the 24-core Core i9 14900K. Impressively, the CPU maintained a maximum temperature of just 78°C during testing, showcasing its efficiency.

Total War: Warhammer III

In gaming benchmarks, Total War: Warhammer III revealed a significant turnaround for the 265K. It now leads the Battle benchmark with an average of 220fps and a minimum of 182fps, outperforming all AMD X3D CPUs. This is a substantial improvement from the previous average of 202fps and minimum of 158fps.

However, in the Mirrors of Madness benchmark, the 265K averaged 119fps, which, while still trailing behind the latest Zen 5 X3D CPUs, outpaced the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The 200S Boost mode provided only a marginal increase of 1fps in both tests, indicating that the gains are becoming more refined.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 presented a more challenging scenario for the 265K. In 2024, it averaged a mere 117fps, significantly lagging behind the Core i9 14900K and Ryzen 7 7800X3D. After re-benching all CPUs due to various updates, the 265K now achieves an average of 124fps, closing the gap with the Core i5 14600K. While it remains in the last position, the performance is no longer embarrassingly low.

Far Cry 6

Similarly, in Far Cry 6, the 265K’s average frame rate improved from 157fps in 2024 to 164fps, now only 6fps behind the 14600K. With the 200S Boost enabled, it reached 166fps, showcasing its gradual ascent in gaming performance.

F1 24

It’s essential to note that many games are less sensitive to CPU performance, with the GPU often taking precedence. In F1 24, the 265K performed admirably, remaining only 6fps behind the X3D chips, even with 200S Boost enabled. The differences in performance are minimal, reinforcing the notion that while the 265K may not be the top gaming CPU, it is certainly no longer a liability.

As the landscape of gaming CPUs continues to evolve, the Core Ultra 7 265K has proven itself to be a viable option for those seeking a balance between productivity and gaming performance. While the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D still reigns supreme for gaming enthusiasts, the 265K has shed its previous reputation and is now a competitive choice worth considering, especially if found at a favorable price.
