Google Wallet on Android extends its streak of digital State ID support

What you need to know

In a significant development for Android users, Google Wallet is now rolling out support for digital State IDs in Arkansas, marking the addition of the 10th state to this growing feature. This rollout comes after a promise made by Google back in April, and users can now check for this functionality by navigating to Wallet > Add to Wallet > Driver’s License/State ID.

  • To utilize this feature, users will need to photograph both the front and back of their ID, along with a quick video selfie for verification purposes.
  • Arkansas joins an expanding list of states that have embraced digital IDs, including California, Arizona, Georgia, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, and North Dakota, which collectively enhance the convenience of identity verification for users.

As reported by 9to5Google, the addition of Arkansas signifies a continued effort by Google to incorporate digital IDs into the daily lives of its users, a mission that remains active through the end of 2024. The digital ID initiative has been steadily gaining traction, with New Mexico being the latest state to join the ranks late last year.

Interestingly, while both Arkansas and Montana were announced in April as states expected to receive digital ID support, only Arkansas has been made available as of October 6. This indicates that Google is diligently addressing any potential challenges before fully rolling out the promised features in these states.

Additionally, the April announcement also hinted at digital ID support in the U.K., where Google is collaborating with the Rail Delivery Group to introduce digital ID capabilities for select Railcards, providing a more secure method for residents to confirm their identities.
