Silent Hill producer says Konami announced three games to show it was serious

Reviving a Classic Franchise

Motoi Okamoto, the series producer behind the iconic horror franchise Silent Hill, recently shared insights into Konami’s strategic approach to revitalizing the beloved series. In a series of tweets, translated by Automaton, Okamoto revealed that the publisher announced three new entries back in 2022 as a clear signal of its commitment to the future of Silent Hill.

After a prolonged hiatus since the last mainline release, Silent Hill 4, which debuted in 2004, the franchise had seen only a handful of spin-offs, with the last being 2012’s Downpour. However, the landscape shifted dramatically with the release of the highly anticipated remake of Silent Hill 2 in 2025, marking the beginning of a new era for the series. This resurgence includes the recent addition of Silent Hill F, further expanding the franchise’s narrative universe.

Okamoto emphasized the importance of this multi-title announcement, stating, “Three years ago, in 2022, we announced three titles: Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill F, and Silent Hill: Townfall. We didn’t want to just announce a single remake to ‘test the waters.’ We wanted people to feel how serious we were about reviving the series.”

He acknowledged the inherent risks of developing both a remake and a new title concurrently, but underscored that the primary goal was to convey a strong commitment to the franchise. “Only when a new game is announced can the future of a series be seen,” Okamoto noted. “Users won’t feel motivated to engage with an IP unless they can sense it has a future.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of consumer expectations in the gaming industry today.

Okamoto’s perspective sheds light on a crucial aspect of franchise management: the necessity for publishers to demonstrate their dedication to a series in order to foster excitement among players. “If the company takes a wait-and-see approach, so will the players,” he cautioned, advocating for a proactive strategy that reassures fans and cultivates genuine enthusiasm for upcoming releases. “I think that’s only fair,” he concluded, encapsulating the essence of a revitalized commitment to a storied franchise.
