OpenAI is preparing to unveil a series of exciting updates for its popular app, Sora, which has quickly ascended to the top of the App Store following its launch in late September. Currently holding the No. 1 spot in both the U.S. and Canada, Sora is set to enhance its offerings with new video editing tools, the ability for users to create character “cameos” of pets and other objects, and improved social features. Additionally, the eagerly anticipated Android version of the app is on the horizon, with a promise of its arrival “actually coming soon.”
Upcoming Features and Enhancements
The announcement regarding these developments was made by Bill Peebles, head of Sora, via a post on X. He indicated that the new creation tools would be available within the next few days, allowing users to transform their pets and beloved items—such as stuffed toys—into unique cameos.
sora roadmap update: in the spirit of building this app openly, here’s what we’re landing soon.first, more creation tools. character cameos are coming in the next few days: you’ll be able to cameo your dog, guinea pig, favorite stuffed toy, and pretty much anything else you… pic.twitter.com/GX7CJXWRcZ— Bill Peebles (@billpeeb) October 22, 2025
The “cameo” feature allows users to create AI personas based on recorded video references, which can then be shared with friends and used to generate collaborative videos featuring the AI character.
Peebles expressed enthusiasm about the potential for users to register a plethora of imaginative new cameos. To facilitate this, the user interface for generation will be updated to display trending cameos in real time, making it easier for users to discover popular creations.
In addition to character cameos, Sora will introduce basic video editing capabilities, beginning with the ability to stitch together multiple clips. The company plans to roll out more advanced editing tools over time. Furthermore, an enhanced social experience is in the works, which may include dedicated channels tailored for universities, companies, sports clubs, and more.
OpenAI is also addressing user feedback regarding moderation, aiming to reduce the stringent controls that some have found excessive, while simultaneously working to enhance overall app performance.
While Sora is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, OpenAI has yet to announce a specific launch date for the Android version. Peebles reassured users that it should be live “soon,” though further details remain under wraps.
According to third-party app store data from Appfigures, Sora has achieved approximately 2 million downloads since its debut less than a month ago. This milestone is particularly impressive given that the app is still invite-only and has launched exclusively in the U.S. and Canada.
