Path of Exile 3.27 adopts Elden Ring’s most grotesque mechanic for the free ARPG’s first-ever sequel league

Path of Exile 3.27 introduces the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ league, marking a significant milestone as the first sequel league in the acclaimed ARPG’s history. While the spotlight has shifted towards the early-access launch of PoE 2, the original game continues to thrive, benefiting from over a decade of dedicated development by Grinding Gear Games. This latest update not only enhances the gameplay experience but also introduces intriguing new mechanics that allow players to modify their characters and acquire unique, fleshy gear—all at no cost to the player.

Reviving a Beloved Mechanic

Game director Mark Roberts describes the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ as “a true sequel to the Breach league,” which first captivated players in 2016. The Breach mechanic has evolved into a cornerstone of Path of Exile, celebrated for its engaging gameplay loop that challenges players to defeat waves of enemies within a time limit. The revamped version of this mechanic is seamlessly integrated into the early stages of the campaign, where players encounter the Keepers in The Coast, the initial zone of Act One.

The Keepers are tasked with defending Wraeclast from the Breachlords, and players will be accompanied by Ailith, their founder, during these encounters. In areas where the hiveborn have constructed barriers, Ailith provides a spark of cleansing fire, enabling players to break through and clear a path for her to unleash a powerful blast. Players will also engage in traditional Breach-style encounters, where stabilizing a rift leads to a boss battle against Vruun, Marshal of Xesht, culminating in rewards for those who succeed.

Innovative Character Modifications

Upon completing these challenges, players are taken to the Monastery of the Keepers, where they are introduced to the Genesis Tree—a literal giant plant that introduces a new specialization network. This allows players to invest points into modifying the tree’s fruits, which encompass items, equipment, currency, and even new limbs. The special “breach-hands,” known as Grafts, can be fused to a player’s body, granting passive benefits or unlocking active skills to enhance gameplay. With sixteen Graft types available, players can eventually equip a second Graft to amplify their abilities further.

The Grafted gear, while typically immune to standard crafting methods, can be enhanced through a new passive that allows the Genesis Tree to forge “fleshy mockeries of currency orbs.” This innovation ensures that players can still modify their gear effectively, with the potential to discover unique ‘Foulborn’ variants that guarantee favorable outcomes when crafting. These variants may even alter the properties of unique items, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game.

New Challenges and Enhancements

Another exciting feature in the 3.27 update is the introduction of Bloodlines, which function similarly to a secondary Ascendancy, granting players the powers of iconic bosses from the game. By defeating these foes, players can unlock various Bloodlines that enhance their skills and abilities, allowing for greater customization of their characters.

Returning from the previous update, the three new pinnacle boss battles have been upgraded to tougher uber variants, presenting a formidable challenge for seasoned players. Asynchronous trading, which proved successful in PoE 2, has also been integrated into this update, allowing for a more streamlined trading experience that has reportedly increased trade activity significantly.

Quality of Life Improvements

In addition to these new features, Path of Exile 3.27 brings a host of quality-of-life upgrades. Players can now mass-identify items without using Scrolls of Wisdom, disenchant items in towns and hideouts, and level multiple skill gems with a single click. The ability to respec the Atlas passive tree with gold adds further convenience, while the Heist mechanic receives a long-awaited overhaul, allowing rogues to start at max level immediately, eliminating the previous grind.

Path of Exile 3.27 ‘Keepers of the Flame’ is set to launch on Friday, October 31, and is available for free on Steam or through the standalone client. With its rich updates and engaging gameplay, it promises to continue captivating both new and veteran players alike.
