Helldivers 2’s 150GB PC install is “unacceptably large,” and Arrowhead hopes to work out a solution that could “theoretically slice the size in half”

Developer Addresses Storage Concerns for Helldivers 2

For avid players of Helldivers 2 on PC, the substantial 150GB storage requirement has become a notable topic of conversation. This file size is considerably larger than its console counterpart, prompting developer Arrowhead to acknowledge the frustration it has caused among gamers. In a recent interview, game director Mikael Eriksson emphasized that addressing this issue remains a top priority for the development team.

“PC file size is unacceptably large right now,” Eriksson stated, shedding light on the underlying reasons for this hefty storage demand. He referenced a blog post from the studio’s deputy technical director, which elaborated on the technical challenges at play. The game is designed to support both mechanical hard drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs). Consequently, many data files are duplicated to enhance loading times for users still relying on HDDs. This duplication is a significant factor contributing to the increased file size on PC.

In contrast, the file sizes on consoles, where SSDs are now standard, reflect a more streamlined approach, devoid of such duplications. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, Arrowhead’s commitment to optimizing performance and storage efficiency is clear, and players can expect ongoing updates as the team works to refine the experience.
