Windows just got native passkey support for one of my favorite password managers

Microsoft is making significant strides towards a passwordless future, a vision that has been gaining traction in recent years. The tech giant is now enhancing Windows 11 with native support for passkeys, integrating two widely-used password managers: 1Password and Bitwarden. This latest development aims to bolster security and simplify user access, as the update is currently rolling out and will be fully available with the upcoming Windows November 2025 security update.

Microsoft makes using passkeys a lot easier on Windows 11

In a recent announcement on the Windows IT Pro Blog, Microsoft elaborated on its plans regarding password managers and passkeys. For those unfamiliar, password managers are tools that securely store passwords in a centralized vault, allowing users to retrieve them easily when logging into various services. These tools have evolved to support passkeys, which are cryptographic keys provided by the manager to authenticate users automatically, eliminating the need for manual password entry.

With the new update, users can create and save passkeys directly within Windows using the Microsoft Password Manager. However, for those who prefer using 1Password or Bitwarden, Microsoft has ensured that both services can seamlessly integrate into the Windows environment, allowing users to create and store passkeys effortlessly.

The capabilities of these passkeys are noteworthy:

With plugin passkey manager support, packaged credential managers can integrate directly into Windows. Users can save, manage, and use passkeys across browsers and native apps — thanks to the new plugin provider capability. Setting up your credential manager is part of the passkey creation flow. Authentication uses Windows Hello — whether that is PIN, face, or fingerprint — so only you can access your credentials.

Long-time Bitwarden users have expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration, highlighting the benefits of having a native solution within Windows. Bitwarden’s representatives shared their excitement, stating:

“Bitwarden is delighted to collaborate with Microsoft on bringing native passkeys to Windows 11. This partnership enables more organizations and users to embrace passkeys confidently, knowing they can manage their credentials securely on Windows and across all their devices and platforms.”

As the rollout progresses, users are encouraged to explore the advantages of passkeys for enhanced security. With the promise of a more secure and user-friendly experience, Microsoft is paving the way for a future where passwords may soon be a thing of the past.
