Continued Development and Future Prospects for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
With over seven million copies of the action-packed Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 flying off the shelves, it’s clear that developer Saber Interactive has struck a chord with gamers. The success of this title has not only solidified its place in the gaming world but has also paved the way for a much-anticipated sequel. Just six months post-launch, Saber Interactive announced the development of Space Marine 3, igniting discussions among fans regarding the implications for ongoing support of the second installment.
Concerns about the future of Space Marine 2 were addressed by Saber, who reassured players that the introduction of a sequel would not spell the end for major updates to the current game. This topic resurfaced during a recent episode of Games Workshop’s Warhammer TV show, Deep Strike, where Saber’s creative director, Oliver Hollis-Leick, was questioned about the timing of the sequel’s announcement in relation to potential single-player story DLC for Space Marine 2.
Hollis-Leick clarified that the two projects are not in competition, as they occupy entirely different stages of development. “The thing is the development cycles for these projects are long. For Space Marine 2, it was something like four years. And so, for Space Marine 3, it’s going to be the same,” he explained.
The early announcement of Space Marine 3 serves a dual purpose, according to Hollis-Leick. It aims to reassure fans that the beloved character, Titus, will not be sidelined for another lengthy hiatus. “We announced it to keep people aware of the fact we’re going to continue this, that there’s going to be more coming. But we’re also doing the same thing with DLC,” he noted. “There’s lots already been created and there’s lots more to come. They’re definitely not competing for resources.”
Since its launch, Space Marine 2 has seen a steady stream of post-launch updates, enhancing the gaming experience with new missions and enemies for its co-op mode, reminiscent of Left 4 Dead. Additionally, players can look forward to a year filled with new content, including a new Techmarine class and an expansion to the game’s Battle Barge.
