Microsoft Windows users are being urged to undertake a vital update to safeguard their systems from potential threats. The call to action comes in light of the discontinuation of support for Windows 10, which means that users will no longer receive automatic security and feature updates. Kian Rogers, a Practitioner Cyber Security Professional (PraCSP) and Penetration Tester at SecQuest, emphasized the importance of this transition, noting that Windows 10 has officially reached its end-of-life stage.
As a result, users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11, assuming their devices meet the compatibility requirements. “With Windows 10 now at its end-of-life, Microsoft will cease to provide security updates,” Mr. Rogers explained. “This leaves any newly discovered vulnerabilities unaddressed, increasing the risk of attacks over time.”
For those unable to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft is offering an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which provides an additional year of security fixes. Typically a paid service, the Windows 10 Consumer ESU program is currently available at no cost for home users who sign in with a Microsoft account, allowing them to receive critical security updates until October 13, 2026. Mr. Rogers advised, “To protect your information and privacy from unauthorized access, enrolling in the ESU program is a prudent step.”
It is also important to note that users of earlier Windows versions, such as 7, 8, and Vista, have been without support for a significantly longer time, rendering them even more vulnerable to cyber threats. Microsoft has previously cautioned that while it is possible to continue using a PC running Windows 10, the lack of ongoing software and security updates significantly increases the risk of malware and viruses.
After the cessation of support on October 14, 2025, Microsoft recommends upgrading to a supported version of Windows. Transitioning to a new device capable of running Windows 11 can enhance user experience and security. For those considering a new Windows 11-compatible PC, Microsoft offers trade-in and recycling schemes through various partners, providing an opportunity to earn some extra cash while responsibly disposing of old devices.
For more detailed information on the upgrade process, users can visit Microsoft’s website. The installation steps for Windows 11 may vary, but generally include:
- Click ‘Start’ and navigate to ‘Settings’.
- Locate ‘Update & Security’ and select ‘Windows Update’.
- Select ‘Check for updates’.
