X introduces standalone messaging app X Chat

Expansion of Messaging Features

X is venturing into new territory with the development of a dedicated messaging platform, marking a significant step in its strategy to broaden functionalities beyond its established social media framework. Currently undergoing testing, this new chat interface will enable users to access X’s direct messages directly from their desktop, independent of the main platform. App researcher Nima Owji recently unveiled images of this standalone interface, which is crafted to streamline message management.

In addition to the desktop version, X is reportedly in the early stages of developing a mobile app specifically for X Chat. Should this app come to fruition, it would position X in direct competition with established messaging giants such as WhatsApp and Messenger. This initiative aligns seamlessly with Elon Musk’s vision of transforming X into an ‘everything app,’ akin to China’s WeChat, which seamlessly integrates messaging, payments, and a variety of other services.

Several Western tech companies, including Meta and TikTok, have previously attempted similar all-encompassing strategies, though with mixed results. As X continues to refine its approach, direct messaging is poised to become a pivotal component of its overarching plans, particularly with a focus on encrypted communication. Furthermore, the platform is actively pursuing regulatory approvals to roll out payment services, which could eventually be woven into its messaging capabilities.
