New York City is being recreated at 1:1 scale inside Minecraft — project is 5 years in and contains over 50,000 buildings so far

YouTuber MineFact, the visionary behind the Build The Earth project, has recently unveiled a remarkable achievement in the realm of Minecraft. In a captivating video, he showcased the extensive progress made by his dedicated team, which has meticulously recreated a significant portion of Lower Manhattan. This ambitious endeavor, executed at a 1:1 scale, began with a collaborative effort involving 50 to 80 players working in unison, covering an impressive area of nearly 700 square kilometers, or approximately 270 square miles. The commitment to real-world accuracy has led to certain areas being reconstructed multiple times.

Progress and Achievements

The team has successfully completed several neighborhoods, including iconic locations such as Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty, as well as vibrant districts like NoHo, SoHo, Nolita, Bowery, Little Italy, Chinatown, and Two Bridges. Notably, every neighborhood south of Canal Street has been recreated, with the exception of the Financial District.

Another prominent figure in this expansive project is PippenFTS, a fellow YouTube creator who aspires to replicate the entire planet on a 1:1 scale within Minecraft. This ambitious goal has sparked a massive collaborative effort, with 45 teams contributing, ranging from small groups to thousands of participants, all working together to bring this vision to life, one block at a time. The BTE New York City team stands out as the largest, boasting over 3,719 members as of now.

Future Aspirations

Despite the impressive progress made thus far, the team acknowledges that they are merely scratching the surface of what could be a multi-decade undertaking. While most completed neighborhoods are concentrated in Lower Manhattan, there is notable advancement in other parts of Manhattan, as well as some development in Queens and a section of Brooklyn. However, The Bronx and Staten Island remain untouched at this stage.

To further their efforts, the team is actively seeking volunteers who wish to contribute to this monumental project. No prior experience in Minecraft building is necessary, as the team provides guidance and basic building templates to help newcomers get started. Interested individuals can join the BTE NYC Discord server or visit the Build The Earth NYC website for more information on how to participate.
