Messenger is Shutting Down: How to Keep Chatting After April

Meta has begun notifying its Messenger web users that the platform will soon be discontinued, with less than 60 days remaining before the shutdown takes effect. This decision follows the recent phase-out of the Messenger desktop application, leaving users with limited options for accessing their chats.

As one of the largest messaging platforms globally, Meta’s Messenger is intricately linked to Facebook. This integration has created challenges for users who prefer not to maintain a Facebook account, particularly when accessing Messenger via desktop. The standalone desktop app previously offered a workaround, but its discontinuation last year left the website as the sole alternative—until now.

Desktop Messenger Users Forced to Facebook’s Website

According to an updated support page from Meta, first highlighted on Reddit, the company will cease support for messenger.com by April 2026. After this date, users will be unable to access the website for messaging purposes.

“Starting April 2026, messenger.com will no longer be available for messaging. The Messenger desktop app is also no longer available,” the support page states. Meta has confirmed that once support ends, users will be automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages.

Continue Using Messenger Without Facebook

Despite this significant change, Meta has reassured users that access to Messenger is not entirely being revoked for those without Facebook accounts. Individuals without a Facebook profile can still engage in chats through the Facebook web interface or the mobile Messenger app.

Moreover, Meta provides users with the ability to save and migrate their conversations, including those from Facebook Marketplace, to the new channels by setting up a PIN. This feature aims to facilitate a smoother transition as Meta consolidates its messaging services into Facebook, a process that began in 2023. The removal of the desktop app in December 2025 marked a pivotal moment in this transition, although the company allowed a grace period before fully discontinuing the service.

However, the long-term future of Messenger access without a Facebook account remains uncertain, leaving users to ponder their options moving forward.
