OpenAI’s Codex is now on Windows

OpenAI has officially launched its Codex agentic coding application for Windows, marking a significant expansion of its capabilities beyond the Mac platform. The initial reception of Codex has been overwhelmingly positive; the Mac version garnered over 1 million downloads within its first week of release, and currently boasts 1.6 million weekly active users. With more than 500,000 developers eagerly awaiting the Windows version, OpenAI anticipates a similarly enthusiastic response.

Features Tailored for Windows Developers

The Windows iteration of Codex is not merely a port of the Mac application; it has been meticulously designed to integrate seamlessly into genuine Windows development environments. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized that this version is tailored for real-world usage, ensuring that developers can leverage familiar tools and workflows.

One of the standout features of Codex for Windows is its native sandboxing capability, which allows developers to operate within a secure environment. By default, the app utilizes its own Windows sandbox, but users also have the option to employ the Windows Subsystem for Linux, providing flexibility in tool usage. This adaptability is further enhanced by OS-level controls, such as restricted tokens and filesystem access management, enabling the application to function effectively within PowerShell, Microsoft’s default command-line shell.

Visually and functionally, the Windows version mirrors its Mac counterpart, offering the same skills, automations, and support for worktrees. However, it also introduces Windows-specific features, including a WinUI skill tailored for developers focused on creating Windows applications.

A Unique Approach to Coding

What distinguishes Codex from other coding applications is its emphasis on managing the agent rather than solely concentrating on the code. Users can easily view code diffs and switch to their preferred integrated development environments (IDEs), but the primary interface is designed to facilitate interactions with the agent. OpenAI describes this innovative layout as a “command center for agents,” which aptly captures its essence.

Codex operates on OpenAI’s latest coding-specific model, GPT-5.3-Codex, while also allowing users to switch to earlier versions such as GPT-5.2-Codex or GPT-5.1-Codex-Max. For tasks requiring expedited processing, the GPT-5.1-Codex-Mini model is available. Additionally, users can adjust the reasoning level for each model, providing further customization to suit individual needs.

Codex for Windows is now accessible to all users across various tiers, including ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, inviting a broader audience to explore its capabilities.
