Meta rolls out new scam detection tools to Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger

Meta has unveiled a suite of enhanced scam detection tools aimed at bolstering user safety across its platforms: Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. These new features are crafted to proactively alert users to potential threats, acknowledging the cunning tactics employed by scammers who often seek to evade detection.

Enhanced Alerts on Facebook

In a bid to fortify user awareness, Meta is currently testing new alerts on Facebook that will notify users about suspicious friend requests. If you encounter a request from an account exhibiting signs of dubious activity—such as a lack of mutual friends or an unusual geographical location—you will receive an alert. This prompt encourages users to carefully evaluate the request before deciding to accept or block it.

WhatsApp’s Device Linking Warnings

On the WhatsApp front, Meta is introducing device linking warnings to thwart scammers attempting to manipulate users into linking their accounts to unauthorized devices. Scammers may impersonate entities, such as talent competitions, urging users to cast votes via a website and subsequently enter a device linking code. Meta elaborates that these fraudsters might also entice users to scan QR codes under misleading pretenses, which could inadvertently connect the scammer’s device to the user’s account. To combat these tactics, WhatsApp will now issue alerts when behavioral signals indicate a potentially suspicious linking request.

Messenger’s Advanced Scam Detection

In Messenger, Meta is set to expand its advanced scam detection capabilities to additional countries this month, although specific locations have yet to be disclosed. This feature analyzes conversations with new contacts for patterns typically associated with scams, such as dubious job offers. Should such patterns be detected, users will receive a warning and be prompted to share recent chat messages for an AI-driven scam review. If a scam is confirmed, Meta will advise users to block or report the suspicious account, alongside providing insights into prevalent scams.

In its commitment to user safety, Meta reported the removal of over 159 million scam ads last year, with an impressive 92% taken down before any user reports. Additionally, the company eliminated 10.9 million accounts linked to criminal scam operations across Facebook and Instagram, reinforcing its dedication to creating a safer online environment.
