Even among the crowd of gorgeous illustrated games, At Fate’s End is stunning enough to stand out

My journey through the world of gaming journalism has set a high bar for artwork that captivates and demands attention. At this year’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco, I stumbled upon a gem I had not anticipated: At Fate’s End. With no prior knowledge of its existence, I found myself irresistibly drawn to its demo chair after just a few seconds of animation.

Artistry That Captivates

The visual appeal of At Fate’s End stands out even amidst formidable contenders like Supergiant’s Hades and last year’s Dispatch. The game showcases an artistry that transcends typical 2D hand-illustrated styles, featuring intricate details that breathe life into its characters. As I took control of the protagonist, Shan—a young outcast from a family of demigods—I was struck by the subtlety of her movements. The way she shifted her weight when coming to a stop, her hair flowing forward with lingering momentum, added a layer of realism that is often overlooked in gaming.

Dialogue sequences, which initially appeared to be static, were enlivened by Shan’s occasional shifts in posture and small gestures. The camera’s dynamic movements during pivotal moments felt like a showcase of pure animation prowess, as At Fate’s End embraces every opportunity to elevate its visual storytelling.

A Unique Narrative Experience

But beyond its stunning visuals, what truly defines At Fate’s End? It presents a unique blend of 2D action and family drama, steering clear of the roguelite structure that characterizes Hades. From the first 20 minutes, it became clear that Shan’s journey revolves around reconciling with her more powerful siblings after unexpectedly becoming the Chosen One in her family. The conversation system allows players to choose how to engage with each sibling, uncovering the layers of family trauma that create emotional distance.

This narrative depth is reminiscent of the heartfelt storytelling seen in Spiritfarer, a project that has been in development for five years. If the remaining content of At Fate’s End lives up to its promising start, it will undoubtedly be a remarkable addition to the gaming landscape.

While a release date has yet to be announced, anticipation builds as At Fate’s End is slated for launch later this year.
