ChatGPT’s free tier gets GPT 5.4 mini model with improved coding capabilities

OpenAI has unveiled its latest innovations in artificial intelligence with the introduction of the GPT 5.4 mini and nano models, marking a significant step forward for users of its ChatGPT platform. The GPT 5.4 mini is now accessible to free users, expanding the reach of advanced AI capabilities.

Earlier this month, OpenAI rolled out the GPT 5.4 model for its premium tiers, but the arrival of the mini and nano versions brings these enhancements to a broader audience. These new models promise substantial improvements across various functionalities, particularly in coding, reasoning, multimodal understanding, and tool utilization.

OpenAI emphasizes that the GPT‑5.4 mini offers notable advancements over its predecessor, the GPT‑5 mini. It operates more than twice as fast and closely matches the performance of the larger GPT‑5.4 model in several key evaluations, including SWE-Bench Pro and OSWorld-Verified.

These models are designed to excel in environments where latency can significantly impact user experience. They cater to coding assistants that require rapid responsiveness, subagents that efficiently complete auxiliary tasks, and systems that interpret and analyze screenshots in real time. In such scenarios, the most effective model is not necessarily the largest one; rather, it is the one that can deliver swift responses, reliably utilize tools, and perform complex professional tasks with ease.

As the trend of “vibe coding” gains traction, the emphasis on coding capabilities becomes increasingly relevant. OpenAI asserts that both the GPT 5.4 mini and nano models are adept at managing coding workflows, including targeted edits, codebase navigation, front-end generation, and debugging loops—all with minimal latency.

In addition to being part of ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers, the GPT 5.4 mini is now available in OpenAI’s API and Codex, while the nano variant can be accessed exclusively through the API, both at significantly lower costs compared to the original GPT 5.4 model.
