Exploring the Visual Splendor of Death Stranding 2 on PC
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach emerges as a striking testament to the capabilities of the PlayStation 5, showcasing a visual fidelity that is both breathtaking and immersive. This title stands apart in a gaming landscape often caught between the remnants of previous generations and the ambitious demands of next-gen graphics. From the very first moments, players are treated to a stunning display of photo-realism that captivates and enchants, a feeling that lingers throughout the gameplay experience.
Transitioning to the PC version, the allure of this visual masterpiece continues, albeit with some noticeable differences. Running on a setup equipped with a GeForce RTX 3080, a Ryzen 5 5600X, and 32GB of RAM, the game initially performs admirably, striking a balance between the “Performance” and “Quality” modes of its PS5 counterpart. The result is a smooth 1440P experience at 60FPS, with potential for higher frame rates if uncapped. However, achieving a full 4K resolution proves more challenging, necessitating careful adjustments to the graphics settings to maintain a consistent frame rate.
Choosing to play at 1440P and 60FPS, I aimed for a stable experience without relying on frame generation. Yet, even with this seemingly robust configuration, minor stutters and frame drops became a recurring issue. These disruptions, absent in the original PS5 version, detract from the otherwise polished experience and serve as a reminder of the challenges faced in this PC port.
As an avid supporter of the Steam Deck, I was eager to test Death Stranding 2 on Valve’s hybrid handheld. While I anticipated a compromise in performance due to the device’s older hardware, I had previously been pleasantly surprised by the capabilities of other Sony PC ports on the Steam Deck, such as The Last Of Us 2. However, despite the inclusion of a dedicated “Portable” graphics preset, the performance of Death Stranding 2 on the handheld was disappointing. Frame rates fluctuated between 15-25FPS, occasionally reaching 30FPS indoors, but never providing a truly playable experience.
Overall, while Death Stranding 2 on PC offers a visually stunning adventure, the persistent frame drops and stutters prevent it from achieving the seamless quality of its original release. For dedicated fans of Hideo Kojima, this port provides an opportunity to engage with his latest narrative journey, but there remains hope that future updates will refine the experience, allowing it to reach its full potential.
