Steam Machine hardware support appears in latest SteamOS build, along with loads of Steam deck tweaks

SteamOS 3.8.0 Preview: A Step Closer to the Steam Machine

Valve has unveiled the latest iteration of its operating system, SteamOS 3.8.0 Preview, aptly named “Second Clutch.” This update is not only pivotal for the Steam Deck but also lays the groundwork for the forthcoming Steam Machine. With an array of new features and essential bug fixes, this release signifies Valve’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its gaming ecosystem.

While the specifications of the Steam Machine are already known, the inclusion of “Initial support for upcoming Steam Machine hardware” in this update serves as a reassuring indication of Valve’s dedication to launching this eagerly awaited desktop gaming companion within the year.

The latest SteamOS build was made available last night, and Valve has meticulously detailed the extensive list of updates on its website. Spanning over 80 lines, this release stands out as one of the most significant updates to date. Although many changes are relatively minor, the highlight remains the initial support for the upcoming Steam Machine hardware.

However, Valve has chosen not to elaborate on the specifics of this support. It remains unclear whether this pertains solely to drivers for the Steam Machine hardware or if it encompasses additional software features, such as interface elements designed for managing the Steam Machine. Furthermore, it is uncertain whether developers will have access to this support for interaction or if it is intended solely for internal testing by Valve.

As for the anticipated release date of the Steam Machine, Valve has reaffirmed its intention to launch the device in 2026. However, with the initial “early this year” timeline slipping away, the arrival of the Steam Machine now appears more likely to coincide with the Fall/Winter season.

The pricing of the Steam Machine remains an enigma, with estimates ranging from approximately 0 to well over ,000. Valve has yet to provide any definitive information regarding the cost.

Returning to the features of SteamOS 3.8.0, some of the most notable enhancements include:

  • A new graphics driver offering performance and stability improvements.
  • Enhanced VRR frame pacing.
  • Resolution of session crash issues affecting certain games, including Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Starfield.
  • Improved compatibility with USB racing wheels.
  • Reinstatement of Bluetooth Wake functionality for the Steam Deck LCD.
