Microsoft has been gradually phasing out many of the legacy features that users have come to know in Windows 11, including the once-familiar Control Panel. While many users find the Settings app sufficient for their needs, legacy pop-ups, such as the Bluetooth file transfer tool, still linger. In response to user feedback, Microsoft has announced intentions to modernize various aspects of the operating system.
In a previous statement, the company confirmed that it is working on an overhaul of the dark mode feature, aiming to extend this aesthetic to legacy pop-ups, including the Windows Run dialog. Additionally, plans are underway to implement a dark mode for the Windows Registry Editor; however, Microsoft has refrained from providing a specific timeline for these updates.
Modernization Efforts Underway
According to Marcus Ash, the head of Windows Design, Microsoft is actively developing new tools to modernize more pop-ups, including legacy dialogs and system user interfaces. The company emphasizes that modernizing Windows is its primary focus, while the application of dark mode to legacy components is a secondary priority, particularly if modernization efforts face delays.
“We started with extending dark mode in the Run dialog and various File Explorer surfaces to address customer asks,” Ash noted in a post on X. “At the same time, we are building out tooling to scale modernizing other dialogs across Windows 11 that were built on legacy frameworks.”
One user suggested that Microsoft should prioritize modernizing these areas using WinUI rather than merely obscuring old interfaces. This sentiment resonates with Microsoft, as Ash confirmed that modernization is indeed the company’s main focus. Recent Windows preview builds showcase a modernized Windows Run, developed with WinUI 3, which supports dark mode and is set to receive additional features, including enhanced search capabilities.
However, it’s important to note that the existing legacy Run will remain available and will also undergo a dark mode revamp. Microsoft has indicated that these changes are expected to roll out throughout 2026, without a definitive deadline for the dark mode overhaul.
In addition to these updates, features such as a movable and resizable taskbar are being prioritized, with the native Start menu following closely behind. Furthermore, Microsoft plans to gradually introduce 100% native applications for Windows 11, signaling a significant shift in the operating system’s development approach.
On March 20, Microsoft unveiled a major update for Windows 11, accompanied by a comprehensive list of improvements. As users began to inquire further, the company revealed additional plans, including a reduction in ads within the operating system. While Microsoft will not eliminate “upsells” entirely, it intends to minimize their presence and is even considering removing the requirement for a Microsoft account.
As developments unfold, the anticipation surrounding Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing Windows 11 continues to grow. Only time will reveal the full extent of these changes, but internal sources suggest that the company is earnest in its mission to improve the user experience.
