Google is currently exploring the integration of wallpaper-based theming within its Gemini feature, a component of the Google app. This initiative marks a significant step towards unifying the visual experience across its applications, as the company aims to phase out the longstanding white-and-blue color scheme that has characterized certain apps, including the Play Store and parts of the Google app.
Gemini’s Theming Experimentation
Since the introduction of its wallpaper-based theming engine in 2021, which later evolved into the popular Material You design philosophy, Google has seen a majority of its applications embrace this aesthetic. However, some remnants of the older design remain, particularly in the Play Store and specific sections of the Google app. Now, with the latest updates to Gemini, it appears that Google is ready to bring this feature to its remaining apps.
The experimentation is currently underway with the latest version of the Google app (17.12.51), where users have begun to notice changes in the Gemini overlay. This overlay, which activates when users summon Gemini from their home screens or while using other applications, is now being tested with a color scheme that adapts to the user’s wallpaper. Although the theming feature is not yet widely available, early adopters have managed to enable it manually.
In practical terms, the floating Gemini overlay now showcases a subtly tinted bar and a darker button for Gemini Live, reflecting the system’s theme. For instance, when the system theme shifts from sand to green, the overlay color adjusts accordingly, indicating a responsive design that aligns with user preferences. However, other elements, such as button shapes, remain unchanged for the time being, suggesting that further updates in line with the Material 3 Expressive design philosophy may be forthcoming.
While the theming support for the Gemini overlay has been activated, the main Gemini app continues to display its traditional colors, hinting that the rollout of this feature is still in its infancy. As Google navigates these changes, the potential for a more cohesive and visually appealing user experience looms on the horizon.
