Enhanced File Handling Capabilities
This update broadens the native file handling capabilities, enabling users to open and extract various formats such as .nupkg, .xar, .uu, and .cpio directly within the system. By incorporating these backup and package tools into the Windows 11 core, Microsoft effectively diminishes the reliance on third-party extraction software, streamlining the user experience.
Behind the scenes, the update integrates elements from Project K2, an internal initiative focused on optimization. These enhancements aim to refine the Windows 11 kernel, setting the stage for future AI-driven features while bolstering the overall reliability of the explorer.exe process to mitigate crashes.
Interface Refinements
Among the interface improvements, Windows 11 now ensures that the Downloads folder retains its “Extra Large Icons” setting when accessed via browsers, addressing a previous bug that defaulted the view to “List.” Additionally, several long-standing visual and functional issues have been resolved:
