Microsoft has unveiled a significant update to the Windows 11 experience with the introduction of a modernized Run dialog in the latest preview build, 26300.8346. This new iteration not only embraces a sleek design but also incorporates dark mode support and enhanced performance, marking a notable evolution of a feature that has been a staple since the Windows 95 era.
The Run dialog, accessible via the Win + R shortcut, remains a vital tool for power users, allowing them to execute commands, open file paths, and launch applications swiftly without navigating through File Explorer. Microsoft’s goal with the modern Run is to retain its utility while refreshing its appearance and functionality.
In this redesign, the modern Run dialog aligns with the Fluent Design aesthetic, offering a more contemporary look while boasting improved speed compared to its predecessor. Historically, modern interfaces have been criticized for sluggishness; however, the modern Run defies this trend, achieving a median response time of just 94 milliseconds—faster than the legacy version, which clocks in at approximately 103 milliseconds.
Microsoft acknowledged the challenges faced during the development of the modern Run dialog, emphasizing the importance of maintaining performance while simplifying the user interface. “When we set out on creating the new experience, we knew the existing dialog was fast,” the company stated in a blog post. They conducted extensive research to understand user behavior, which informed their design decisions and ultimately led to a more efficient interface.
Microsoft drops ‘Browse’ feature in new Run
As part of the modernization process, Microsoft carefully analyzed user interactions with the legacy Run dialog to determine which features were essential and which could be eliminated. One such feature is the Browse button, which allowed users to navigate directories to open programs. With usage statistics revealing that less than 0.0038% of users engaged with this feature—based on a sample of 35 million users—Microsoft decided to remove it from the modern Run. This decision reflects a commitment to streamline the user experience based on actual usage patterns.
The modern Run dialog introduces new functionalities, such as support for the ~ command, enabling quick access to the home directory. Additionally, it incorporates icons in the command list, enhancing visual clarity without overwhelming the interface.
How to enable or disable modern Run
For those who may prefer the traditional look and feel, the modern Run feature is optional. Users can enable or disable it through the Advanced Settings menu in Windows. To activate the modern Run dialog, navigate to Settings > Advanced Settings and manually toggle the feature, which will replace the legacy version.
Other changes rolling out with today’s preview update
Beyond the enhancements to the Run dialog, this preview update also brings improvements to the Windows Share UI for Azure Active Directory (AAD) users. Previously, adding an app to the share dialog required users to first install the app from the Microsoft Store. The new update simplifies this process, allowing users to install apps directly from the Share UI.
Additionally, the Magnifier tool has received an upgrade, offering users greater control over zoom levels with preset options ranging from 5% to 400%. These updates are set to roll out to all users in the coming months, but for those eager to experience the changes now, the Windows 11 Build 26300.8346 is available for download from the Experimental Channel.
