In an age where 128GB to 256GB of storage has become the norm, many users find themselves overlooking the importance of regular maintenance on their devices. It’s easy to forget about the clutter that accumulates over time, especially with the convenience of cloud storage. As we approach 2026, numerous Android devices from leading brands like Samsung and Google still come equipped with 128GB or less of on-device storage. This reality underscores the necessity of managing storage effectively, ensuring that ample space is available for apps, music, videos, and more.

Utilizing the Clean Tool for Efficient Storage Management

The Files by Google app offers a suite of built-in tools designed to help users reclaim storage space effortlessly. Among these, the Clean tool stands out as a user-friendly option for quickly identifying and removing unnecessary files. This feature scans your device for outdated files, screenshots, and even those blurry photos that often linger unnoticed. Users can easily navigate through the suggestions, deciding what to keep and what to discard.

To utilize the Clean tool, follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Files by Google app and tap the three-button menu.
  2. Select the Clean tab from the list.
  3. Tap the Arrow icon next to your storage breakdown for a detailed view of space usage.
  4. Return to the Clean tab and browse suggested items for deletion.
  5. Select the files you wish to delete and tap Move files to Trash.

Once files are moved to the Trash, they still occupy space until permanently deleted. To do this, users must navigate to the Trash tab and follow these steps:

  1. Open the Files by Google app and tap the three-button menu.
  2. Select the Trash tab.
  3. Choose the files to delete, either individually or all at once.
  4. Tap Delete twice to confirm.

Setting Up Smart Storage on Pixel Devices

For Pixel users, the Smart Storage feature offers an automated solution to managing photos. When activated, this feature will permanently delete media that has been backed up to Google Photos and is older than 60 days. This approach ensures that valuable on-device storage is not wasted on files that are already safely stored in the cloud.

To enable Smart Storage:

  1. Open the Files by Google app and tap the three-button menu.
  2. Select the Settings tab.
  3. Toggle the switch beside Smart Storage to activate it.

The Importance of Regular Storage Maintenance

Many users have experienced the frustration of running out of storage space when they need it most, whether for downloading a new app or capturing a memorable moment. Unfortunately, storage management often becomes an afterthought until it poses a significant issue. To avoid such scenarios, it’s advisable to monitor storage usage regularly and delete unnecessary content proactively. Photos, videos, and messages can quickly consume available space, making routine clean-ups essential.

Regardless of the Android device in use, the Files by Google app provides an array of features to assist users in maintaining optimal storage levels. For those with the latest Google Pixel models, including the Pixel 10, exclusive features like Smart Storage enhance the experience further, allowing for seamless management of digital content.
