Windows 11 Gets Its First Major Feature Updates of 2026

On this Patch Tuesday, users of Windows 11 are greeted with a series of feature and security updates across all supported versions. This month’s updates stand out, as they introduce several significant enhancements, breaking the trend of the previous four months.

Key Updates for Windows 11

The cumulative update KB5089549 is now accessible for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2, elevating their build numbers to 26200.8457 and 26100.8457, respectively. Additionally, Windows 11 version 26H1, which is exclusively available on the latest Snapdragon X2-based laptops, receives update KB5089548, bringing its build to 28000.2113.

Among the noteworthy features included in KB5089549 (for 25H2 and 24H2) are:

  • Xbox Mode: This new mode replaces the previous Game mode and Full Screen Experience, initially launched on Windows gaming handhelds. Xbox Mode offers a streamlined full-screen gaming experience, minimizing background processes and distractions, effectively turning the Xbox into the central interface.
  • Agents on the Taskbar: Windows 11 can now monitor and interact with AI agents directly from the Taskbar, treating them as applications. This feature supports both first- and third-party AI agents, including the Researcher agent integrated with Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  • File Explorer Enhancements: Users will find improved support for various archiving formats, including uu, cpio, xar, and nupkg NuGet packages. The update also ensures that View and Sort preferences are retained for key folder locations, resolves the notorious white “flash bang” bug, and enhances the reliability of the underlying explorer.exe processes.
  • Windows Driver Improvements: A notable change in driver management sees the Windows kernel no longer trusting cross-signed third-party drivers by default. Instead, only drivers from the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) and those on a trusted legacy list will be automatically accepted. Windows will audit driver compatibility for a minimum of 100 hours and three reboots before enforcing these new rules, potentially blocking some cross-signed drivers.
  • Drag Tray Enhancements: The Drag tray has been rebranded as the Drop tray, with its management interface now located under System > Multitasking in Settings. The updated design includes a smaller peek view, reducing the likelihood of accidental activation.

While these features are certainly the highlights, the update also includes a plethora of minor changes that enhance the overall user experience.

For those on version 26H1, KB5089548 introduces several improvements, including enhancements to the Narrator and Smart App Control, increased Microsoft 365 advertising visibility in Settings, refined Pen settings, a new Settings About page, and minor updates to File Explorer, echoing some of the advancements seen in the 25H2 and 24H2 updates.
