Microsoft lets users disconnect Bing from Windows 11 search

Microsoft is preparing to enhance the user experience for Windows 11 by addressing a frequently voiced concern among its users. The operating system has been criticized for its tendency to prioritize Bing-powered web search results over local file searches, often leading to frustrating encounters. A notable instance of this issue was highlighted in a viral post on X, where a user attempting to access the terminal instead received a link to the 2018 film Terminal, starring Margot Robbie.

Upcoming Changes to Search Functionality

According to a recent report from PCMag, Microsoft is set to introduce a feature that allows users to disable web search results during local searches. This announcement came during a Windows Insiders Program meetup in San Francisco, just ahead of Microsoft’s much-anticipated developer conference, Build. The company teased that users will soon find an option to turn off web searches within the settings menu, specifically under Privacy & Security > Search. A new toggle will appear under the section titled “Show suggested search results.”

In addition to this improvement, Microsoft appears to be planning to offer an option to disable Microsoft Store suggestions in the Windows 11 search feature. Currently, while it is possible to turn off web results, it requires users to navigate to the Windows registry and make manual adjustments—an endeavor that demands a certain level of technical expertise.

With this forthcoming update, Microsoft aims to simplify the process, enabling all users to deactivate Bing web search with a straightforward toggle. Although the exact rollout date for this update remains unannounced, the anticipation among users is palpable as they look forward to a more streamlined search experience on Windows 11.
