In a significant move just days ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21, the Indian government has taken decisive action by banning the Telegram messenger app. This decision has been met with approval from the National Testing Agency (NTA), which has pointed to the platform’s alleged role in facilitating cheating networks. The NTA claims that Telegram has been used to disseminate misinformation and to propagate unfounded claims regarding paper leaks.
Telegram to be permanently banned in India?
Contrary to concerns about a long-term ban, Telegram Messenger is not facing a permanent prohibition in India. In a statement released on June 16, the NTA clarified that the restrictions imposed on the app are temporary in nature. These measures were enacted following recommendations from the agency itself.
- The first restriction limits access to Telegram within India until June 22, encompassing the day of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination and the immediate period following it.
- The second measure mandates that Telegram disable its message-editing feature for messages already posted in India until June 30.
These steps reflect a broader commitment to maintaining the integrity of the examination process and ensuring a fair environment for all candidates involved.
