Microsoft fixes Windows Server 2016 security update failures

Microsoft has addressed a significant issue affecting the installation of the June 2026 security updates on Windows Server 2016 systems that had not been updated. This problem was highlighted in an alert on the admin portal, which confirmed reports from IT administrators regarding the 0x80070002 or FILENOTFOUND errors encountered on impacted systems.

The root of the issue lay in the installation of the KB5094122 update, which required users to first install the previous month’s KB5087537 security update. Without this prerequisite, many customers found themselves unable to successfully deploy the latest security enhancements.

In a reassuring update, Microsoft announced that the installation issue has now been resolved. Affected devices should no longer face installation failures when attempting to apply the June 2026 KB5094122 security update. The company acknowledged the concerns raised by users, stating, “Microsoft received reports that the June 2026 security update (the Originating KBs listed above) might fail to install on some devices running Windows Server 2016.”

In a broader context, Microsoft has been actively addressing various update-related challenges. Last month, the company resolved a similar installation failure issue that resulted in 0x800f0922 errors during the deployment of the May 2026 Windows 11 security update (KB5089549). This particular problem stemmed from insufficient free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP), which caused the update process to roll back automatically on affected devices.

Additionally, in early June, Microsoft cautioned users about potential installation issues with the latest monthly updates, warning that they might encounter error codes 0x80073712 or 0x800f0993 on certain Windows devices upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2.

Further demonstrating its commitment to user experience, Microsoft recently resolved another issue that led Windows Server 2025 devices to boot into BitLocker recovery following the installation of the April 2026 security update. They also addressed a bug that caused installation failures for Windows updates released since May 2025 when using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA).

On a related note, Microsoft has confirmed that it is currently investigating a separate issue that prevents third-party applications from launching essential Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, or from opening documents on Windows systems after the installation of the June 2026 updates.
