Olympic Esports Games Set to Debut in 2025
A year after a peculiar Olympic esports event that lacked actual esports games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has teamed up with the National Olympic Committee of Saudi Arabia to launch the first-ever Olympic Esports Games in 2025.
The partnership between the IOC and Saudi Arabia is slated to span 12 years, with events scheduled to take place regularly throughout this period. According to an announcement by Insider Gaming, the IOC expressed optimism about the forthcoming Olympic Esports Games, stating that they will greatly benefit from this collaboration.
Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, Saudi Arabia’s minister of sport and president of its Olympic committee, hailed the deal as a significant milestone in Olympic history that has the potential to inspire athletes worldwide. He emphasized the commitment to hosting an event that upholds Olympic values while propelling esports onto the international stage.
Saudi Arabia’s growing presence in the esports and gaming industry has been underscored by notable acquisitions and investments in major gaming companies. The country’s Public Investment Fund has made substantial financial commitments to key players in the gaming sector, solidifying its position as a major player in the industry.
The IOC highlighted Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning sports landscape, noting a surge in sports participation among men and women at all levels. The country’s efforts to promote gender equality in sports have resulted in a significant increase in female athletes and national teams competing on the global stage.
Despite controversies surrounding human rights abuses, the IOC and Saudi Arabia have forged ahead with their partnership to bring the Olympic Esports Games to fruition. While details such as the selection of host city, featured games, and participant eligibility are yet to be finalized, the IOC is committed to establishing a dedicated structure to oversee the operations of the event.
