Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse isn’t technically connected to the Netflix anime, but its cinematography was inspired by the show

In a recent revelation, Konami has confirmed that its upcoming Castlevania game, which was teased back in February, will not have a direct continuity with the popular Netflix anime series. However, the artistic choices made for the game were intentionally designed to resonate with fans of the show. Series producer Tsutomu Taniguchi noted, “We know that there are so many fans of the anime series who’ve never played the games before. So even though obviously we wanted to put the game at the forefront of our ideas when we were directing, we really did want to make sure that everyone felt welcome, especially the anime fans who’ve never played the games.”

Artistic Inspiration

Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille from Evil Empire, the development studio behind the game, echoed this sentiment. While he clarified that there are no specific references to the anime in the upcoming title, Belmont’s Curse, he acknowledged that the art style of the Netflix series served as a source of inspiration. “Through the art direction and through the music and the story, I think we are very close to the cinematographic aspect of the series,” Nouaille explained. “This is what we want to capture and want to replicate. I think cinematography is more important than a specific reference to the game.”

Despite the excitement surrounding the new game, questions linger about the future of the Castlevania series on Netflix. It has been over a year and a half since the release of the last season, leaving fans uncertain about its continuation. Speculation persists that a new season based on the beloved Symphony of the Night may be on the horizon, but for now, attention turns to the upcoming game, which marks the first entry in the franchise since 2008.

Taniguchi further emphasized the connection between the game and the anime, stating, “There’s not a wall between the game and the anime. We’re really hoping that people who’ve only watched the anime also enjoy the game.” As the gaming community eagerly anticipates this new chapter in the Castlevania saga, it seems that both gamers and anime enthusiasts will find common ground in this creative endeavor.
