Windows 11 bug hogging over 70GB of SSD storage, Microsoft confirms

Microsoft has recently acknowledged a troubling bug within Windows 11 that has been causing significant storage issues for users. The problem stems from the Capability Access Manager (camsvc), a service designed to manage app permissions for various hardware components, including cameras, microphones, and location tracking.

Storage Consumption Concerns

This glitch has led to an unusual and alarming increase in the size of a specific SQLite Write-Ahead Log file, known as CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal. Under typical circumstances, these log files are relatively modest in size, usually occupying only a few megabytes. However, numerous users have reported that this file has swelled to an astonishing 70 to 80 gigabytes (GB).

In some extreme instances, users have found the log file ballooning to over 200GB, and in rare cases, even reaching up to 500GB. This unexpected growth has resulted in a rapid depletion of available SSD space, often without any new files being added by the user.

The issue first came to light when a user named Donald Gibson shared his experience on the Microsoft Q&A forum, revealing that the log file had consumed more than 66GB of his storage. Following his post, a surge of other Windows 11 users began running disk space analyzers such as WinDirStat or TreeSize, only to discover that their systems were experiencing the same troubling symptoms.

Further complicating matters, reports indicated that Windows Storage Settings was misreporting capacity usage, showing incorrect data in both the “Installed Apps” and “System & Reserved” categories. As user complaints continued to escalate, Microsoft officially confirmed the existence of the bug and subsequently released a hotfix as part of the KB5095093 update.

The tech giant has strongly urged all Windows 11 users to install this latest update promptly to prevent the rogue log file from expanding any further. While Microsoft has not provided specific technical details regarding the root cause of the bug or the reasons behind the continuous writing to the log file, they have assured users that the issue has been addressed in the recent release.
