The Burnout series remains a benchmark in the arcade racing genre, a legacy that continues to influence contemporary titles. Despite its stagnation, the franchise’s impact is undeniable, inspiring numerous imitators and spiritual successors, particularly following Criterion Games’ transition to a support role within EA, where it now primarily contributes to the Battlefield series.
Wreckreation’s Evolution
Among these successors is the 2025 release, Wreckreation, developed by Three Fields Entertainment—a small team of industry veterans, some of whom hail from Criterion Games, with a history dating back to 1999. Although Wreckreation aimed to capture the essence of its predecessors, it received mixed reviews, falling short of the high expectations set by its iconic inspiration.
In a recent statement on Patreon, the team announced their commitment to a sequel: “We’re making a sequel to Wreckreation … It’s built around aggression, pressure, risk, and of course consequence.” This sentiment reflects a dedication to enhancing the player experience.
Fiona Sperry, the studio head, shared insights into the development process: “Over the last six months we’ve been talking directly to players about what they want from a modern arcade driving game, and Wreckreation 2 is the result of those conversations. From handling and progression to events and world design, our community has already helped shape key aspects of the experience. We’re building this game with the players, not just for them.”
The initial announcement trailer for Wreckreation 2 showcases an array of unique vehicles, including a selection of classic muscle cars, alongside the arcade-style handling and exhilarating crash sequences reminiscent of Burnout, where cars are seen soaring through the air.
A New Chapter for Development
In a significant development, the team has established a new studio named When Tides Turn. “While Wreckreation began life at Three Fields Entertainment, we’ve reached a point where it makes sense for the project to have a new home, one that we own completely,” they explained. This transition does not alter the core team, which remains intact, fueled by the same passion and ambition to create the best open-world arcade racer possible.
As the project progresses, the developers plan to keep their community engaged by providing updates on Wreckreation 2 through their Patreon page. They are also inviting players to sign up for playtesting opportunities. With the anticipation surrounding the sequel, there is hope that Wreckreation 2 will fulfill the promise that its predecessor could not quite achieve.
