Task Manager OG: A New Era for macOS System Monitoring
In an exciting development for macOS users, Dave W. Plummer, the original developer of the Windows Task Manager, has unveiled a new project: Task Manager OG (TMOG). Currently in its beta phase, this innovative utility is designed to serve as a robust alternative to Apple’s native Activity Monitor.
Plummer took to social media, sharing insights and screenshots of TMOG, while expressing his belief that the existing Activity Monitor falls short in several areas. He reminisced about the original Windows Task Manager, which was a mere 80KB utility, and highlighted that the Mac version has been crafted from the ground up using Swift, devoid of any original or post-Windows XP code.
Addressing potential concerns regarding intellectual property, Plummer clarified that Microsoft had kindly provided him with the source code of the XP Task Manager, granting him permission to showcase it. However, he emphasized that TMOG is entirely independent, built from scratch to cater specifically to the macOS environment.
Initially, Plummer intended to distribute TMOG through the Mac App Store during its beta phase. However, he encountered challenges due to Apple’s sandboxing requirements, which restrict the application’s ability to access necessary functions. Additionally, Apple’s guidelines prohibit any app from terminating other applications, leading to the decision to offer TMOG via direct download from the project’s website instead.
Looking ahead, Plummer has plans to extend TMOG’s reach with a Windows version in the pipeline, and there are whispers of a Pro version that may be introduced in the future. This evolution of a classic utility promises to enhance system monitoring for users across different platforms.
