Take-Two CEO says he expects the games industry to be in ‘commercial streaming mode within 3 years,’ which is great news if you hate owning things

During Take-Two’s recent earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the ongoing computing hardware crisis, which has made purchasing a GPU from Nvidia’s QuakeCon booth more economical than buying one online. Zelnick candidly remarked that this situation is “not a good thing.” Despite the rising costs of consoles and components potentially alienating some consumers, he expressed confidence that Take-Two does not view this challenge as insurmountable. A significant factor in this optimism is the expectation that more gamers will turn to streaming services in the near future.

Streaming as a Solution

Zelnick highlighted the “advent of streaming,” suggesting that a low-latency, user-friendly gaming experience is on the horizon. He noted that devices previously not designed for gaming will soon be transformed into gaming machines. This shift could democratize access to gaming, allowing a broader audience to participate without the need for expensive hardware.

However, the transition to streaming raises concerns among consumers, especially in light of Sony’s recent decision to halt disc production. Many gamers are apprehensive about relying solely on streaming and subscription services, which could disappear if they fail to meet financial expectations. This sentiment echoes the worries of industry figures like Hideo Kojima, who recently voiced his fears about losing access to beloved movies, books, and music.

While Zelnick remains optimistic about the future of digital media distribution, it is noteworthy that he previously expressed skepticism regarding subscriptions as the sole or primary method of delivering interactive entertainment. As the hardware cost crisis continues to evolve, it may lead to a shift in consumer attitudes, aligning with Ubisoft director Philippe Tremblay’s prediction that by 2024, gamers may become accustomed to the idea of not owning their games. If current trends persist, this adaptation may soon become a necessity.
