In a significant shift within the mobile app ecosystem, the Google Play Store has opened its digital doors to third-party app stores in the United States. Leading the charge is Aptoide Games, which has made its debut on the platform.
New Opportunities for App Distribution
The Google Play Store’s landing page succinctly outlines this development: “Google Play is now distributing third-party Android app stores in the United States.” Users can easily discover and install these new app stores by searching within the Play Store on their Android devices or navigating through their account menu.
This landmark change stems from the legal victory of Epic Games in the case of Epic v. Google. Initially, both companies sought a resolution that would have been less user-friendly, allowing third-party app stores but requiring a cumbersome side-loading process. However, Judge James Donato intervened, advocating for a more streamlined and consumer-centric approach. Following this directive, the companies reached a revised settlement, which was announced back in March.
While the current rollout of third-party app stores is limited to the U.S., Google plans to introduce a Registered App Store program globally later this year. The integration of third-party app stores like Aptoide is designed to be as straightforward as installing any other app, eliminating the need for side-loading and the accompanying warnings that often deter users. These alternative stores will have access to the extensive catalog of apps and games available on Google Play, although the distribution will still occur through Google Play and be subject to its fees.
The Aptoide Connect Team expressed optimism about the changes, stating, “These changes remove the biggest discovery barrier alternative stores faced in the US. They become available one tap away, and they open with a full catalog on day one.”
Interestingly, despite being the catalyst for the antitrust lawsuit that prompted these developments, Epic Games has yet to launch its own app store within this new framework. However, industry observers anticipate that the Epic Games Store, along with a potential new Xbox app for game purchases, will soon be accessible through the Google Play Store.
