The ‘father of Master Chief’ doesn’t like the new Halo’s new halos

Marcus Lehto, often referred to as the “father of Master Chief,” holds a significant place in gaming history as the art director behind the iconic Halo: Combat Evolved, released in 2001, along with its two direct sequels. His creative vision has shaped the aesthetic of the Halo franchise, making his recent critiques of the new Halo: Campaign Evolved particularly noteworthy.

Reflections on the Remake

Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original Combat Evolved, has been reimagined using the advanced capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. While the visuals remain largely faithful to the original, Lehto has expressed concerns regarding the portrayal of the Halo rings in this new iteration. He noted that the rings, which should evoke a sense of ancient mystery and grandeur, appear overly polished and new, lacking the character that comes from centuries of conflict.

In a now-deleted post, Lehto articulated his disappointment, stating, “It had seen hundreds of millennia of conflict. Yet the new game shows it as shiny metal that looks like it was built a few years ago.” He elaborated on his feelings about the main menu ring, describing it as “the most offensive thing we see every time we boot up the game.” According to him, this structure should convey a sense of scale and mystery, yet it instead resembles a “shiny new toy” that fails to capture the essence of the original.

Lehto further emphasized the importance of detail, suggesting that the design lacks the intricate elements that would lend it the epic scale it deserves. He argued that the Halo rings should feel like “ancient tombs” rather than modern constructs. Despite these critiques, he did acknowledge the overall improvements in gameplay, cinematics, and visuals, praising the “brilliant” lighting and the enjoyable upgrades to movement mechanics.

While Lehto has a few reservations about the remake, he remains optimistic about the experience it offers. He stated, “Overall, I really love the upgrades… Do I have gripes? A few, but they are taking a back seat to the fun.” However, his sentiments regarding the halos remain clear: they are, in his view, not great.
