Something to look forward to: Microsoft has been diligently developing its Low Latency Profile (LLP) technology, and Windows 11 users are beginning to experience the advantages of this innovative feature. The latest Patch Tuesday update promises to enhance performance across a variety of applications and Win32 programs, extending beyond just the Start menu and other elements of the native Windows 11 interface.
Enhancing User Experience
Earlier this week, Microsoft initiated the rollout of the Low Latency Profile feature to all Windows 11 users as part of the KB5121003 update. This enhancement is poised to significantly elevate performance across the Windows graphical user interface, native OS applications, and even third-party software developed using traditional Windows APIs like Win32.
The LLP employs a “race to sleep” mechanism that swiftly addresses requests from applications on the verge of launching. By temporarily elevating the CPU’s frequency, this feature has the potential to expedite app launches considerably.
Having made its debut earlier this year, LLP was first introduced to Windows Explorer, with subsequent updates expanding its support to various apps and third-party programs. This expansion aims to enhance their launch times, addressing long-standing criticisms regarding Windows 11’s performance in comparison to its predecessor, Windows 10. Microsoft appears committed to reversing this trend and regaining user confidence.
Following the installation of the KB5121003 update, Windows Latest confirmed that the LLP feature was functioning as intended. Users reported that standard applications such as Notepad and Calculator, as well as web browsers like Chrome and platforms like the Epic Games Store, experienced reduced loading times and quicker rendering of their window content.
It’s important to note that the Low Latency Profile is being distributed through the Controlled Feature Rollout system. This means that not all Windows 11 devices will receive the update simultaneously. However, for those eager to experience the benefits sooner, the feature can be force-enabled using the ViveTool program.
While the Low Latency Profile has demonstrated a noticeable positive effect on Windows 11’s performance, it has also faced criticism as a “lazy trick” aimed at artificially enhancing the speed of an OS perceived as poorly optimized. In defense of the feature, Microsoft VP Scott Hanselman highlighted that similar strategies are employed by Apple in macOS, which have been well-received by users. Moreover, the race-to-sleep approach is a common feature in Arm chips, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 and Nvidia’s RTX Spark, further validating its effectiveness.
