Microsoft’s recent updates to the Windows 11 Taskbar have stirred interest among users, particularly with the anticipated integration of Copilot into the search experience. The feature, initially branded as “Ask Copilot,” was designed to allow users to engage directly with Copilot from the Taskbar while still having access to traditional app and file searches.
Transitioning Features
Since its announcement, Ask Copilot has been gradually rolled out in a preview format to a select group of users, primarily those within commercial settings utilizing the Microsoft 365 Copilot application. However, a consumer version was also under development, aimed at enhancing the standard Microsoft Copilot app experience. Recent developments indicate that both consumer and Microsoft 365 Copilot functionalities are merging, leading to the temporary removal of the Ask Copilot feature.
According to a Microsoft changelog, “As we implement these changes, we’re temporarily disabling Ask Copilot on the taskbar to update the new experience and incorporate your feedback.” While the specifics of the user feedback remain undisclosed, this pause in testing suggests a shift in strategy for the feature.
Returning to Basics
For users who had embraced Ask Copilot, the latest updates will revert the Taskbar to the traditional Windows Search experience. This transition is automatic, ensuring that users can continue to navigate their systems without disruption. The Windows Search functionality is undergoing a redesign aimed at reducing clutter and enhancing the accuracy and speed of search results, reaffirming its status as the primary search tool on Windows.
The Ask Copilot search pane, while also streamlined, offers a chat box for initiating interactions with Copilot and includes shortcut buttons for accessing Copilot Vision directly from the Taskbar. However, for those eagerly awaiting the full rollout of the Ask Copilot experience, it appears that patience will be necessary as the company refines its approach.
