Windows Media Player Legacy is losing its captioning and subtitle feature soon
The app asks people to go to the newer app instead
XenoPanther, an observant user on X, recently highlighted a significant change in Windows 11 Build 29648. In this update, users attempting to activate the “Lyrics, captions, and subtitles” feature in the Legacy version of Windows Media Player are met with an error message. This message indicates that the Legacy app no longer supports the feature, directing users instead to the newer version of Windows Media Player for continued access.
In a follow-up comment, XenoPanther drew a comparison between the new user interface and the previous layout of Windows Media Player Legacy. The old interface allowed users to toggle the feature on or off, while the updated version simplifies this to a single option: “On if available.” This change, however, leads to the aforementioned error message, reinforcing Microsoft’s intention to phase out the Legacy app.
As Microsoft steers users toward the newer Windows Media Player, it faces a challenge in winning over users who have grown accustomed to the capabilities of VLC Player, which still offers features that the new Windows player currently lacks. For Microsoft to successfully transition its user base, addressing these feature gaps will be essential.
