Nvidia’s Shift Away from Windows 10: What Gamers Need to Know
A pivotal moment is on the horizon for dedicated Windows 10 gamers as Nvidia prepares to cease the rollout of new GeForce Game Ready drivers for the operating system. This transition, effective after October, will confine Nvidia’s support to quarterly security updates and critical bug fixes, marking a significant shift in the gaming landscape.
This decision comes just a year after Microsoft officially retired Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Nvidia, however, has shown some leniency by extending full Game Ready and Studio Driver support for an additional year, allowing users of compatible GeForce cards to continue enjoying optimizations for new gaming titles.
According to Nvidia, the last Game Ready driver compatible with Windows 10 will be released in October 2026. Following this, the first driver that excludes support for the OS is slated for November. While existing drivers and games will not cease functioning immediately, Windows 10 users will miss out on regular performance enhancements, compatibility profiles, and feature updates that accompany major releases.
As time progresses, new games may experience reduced reliability or lack the improvements that Windows 11 systems will benefit from. Nevertheless, Nvidia does not plan to completely abandon Windows 10 just yet. After the final full driver release, the company intends to provide quarterly security updates until October 2029, ensuring that critical vulnerabilities and significant bugs are addressed.
In a parallel development, Microsoft has announced an extension of its consumer Extended Security Updates program for another year. This means that enrolled Windows 10 PCs will continue to receive essential operating system patches until October 12, 2027, despite the cessation of regular feature updates and technical support that ended last year.
Notably, GPUs from the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures have already exited the Game Ready program as of October 2025, with critical security updates available only until October 2028.
According to Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, Windows 10 remains on 24.8% of participating Windows PCs, while Windows 11 commands a substantial 75%. Although this survey does not provide a complete overview of the PC market, Statcounter reflects a similar distribution with a 69% to 30% split.
Despite ongoing efforts by companies to encourage users to upgrade, a considerable number of Windows 10 users remain resistant to transitioning to the latest version. Factors such as hardware limitations, particularly in an era of soaring PC prices, along with concerns over surveillance, advertisements, account requirements, and an overwhelming array of AI features, contribute to this reluctance.
