Steam Deck’s Performance with Onimusha: A Pleasant Surprise
The gaming landscape has evolved significantly, and while the Steam Deck’s capabilities are often scrutinized, recent experiences reveal a delightful twist. Valve’s handheld device has proven to be a surprisingly competent platform for playing Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Although it may not reach the optimization heights of titles like Resident Evil Requiem, the performance is commendable, especially when compared to other recent releases such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2.
During testing in the demanding Kyoto hub area, the results were encouraging. The Capcom proprietary engine showcased its strengths, making the gameplay experience enjoyable. While a high-end RTX 5090 PC may offer enhanced visuals, the difference in gameplay enjoyment was not as pronounced as one might expect.
In my view, Onimusha epitomizes what it means for a game to be “playable” on the Steam Deck. While the performance may not compel me to choose handheld gaming over my PC setup at home, it certainly provides enough satisfaction to engage in some Genma-slicing action from the comfort of a hotel room. This balance of performance and portability highlights the potential of the Steam Deck as a viable gaming option for those on the go.
