Ex-BioWare designer says doom and gloom about the next Mass Effect is overstated: ‘I think that they can do it’

In the wake of mixed reactions to recent titles such as Anthem and Mass Effect Andromeda, alongside the divisive Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the gaming community has expressed a fair share of skepticism regarding the upcoming Mass Effect installment from BioWare. Some voices in the industry have even raised doubts about the game’s eventual release.

Armando Troisi, a cinematic designer who played a pivotal role in the Mass Effect trilogy and served as the lead cinematic designer for Mass Effect 2, believes that the current concerns may be overstated. In a recent conversation with FRVR, Troisi remarked, “I think BioWare, when they break it down and do that single-player, interactive narrative-driven, deep combat, progression-driven game, really, there’s nobody that can touch them.”

He likened the creative process at BioWare to a journey of self-discovery, akin to a “walkabout,” suggesting that with the right space to innovate, the studio can return to its roots and deliver a compelling experience. Troisi emphasized that the upcoming game still boasts a talented team, many of whom were integral to the original titles. “They’re the OGs, you know? I don’t think there’s anything that I could tell them that they don’t know what to do,” he stated confidently.

Troisi further articulated that what the development team truly needs is the freedom to operate without external pressures. “I think that they can do it,” he said, expressing his support for the studio’s vision. “I’m rooting for them.”
