Microsoft has taken a proactive step by releasing an out-of-band patch aimed at resolving a persistent audio issue affecting Windows 11 users. This update, which became available on Monday, targets versions 26H2, 25H2, and 24H2 of the operating system, specifically addressing a glitch that hindered audio playback on various USB-connected devices, particularly those utilizing the older USB Audio Class 1.0 standard.
Key Issues Resolved
Users who experienced this audio bug faced several frustrating symptoms, including:
- No audio output from their devices.
- Unresponsive or unavailable sound settings.
- Volume controls that either failed to respond or remained stuck at zero.
- Error messages in Device Manager indicating “This device cannot start (Code 10).”
Prior to this patch, the only workaround was to revert audio settings from advanced configurations like 8-channel or 3D audio to a more basic stereo mode.
The origins of this audio glitch can be traced back to Microsoft’s September 8 security update, which, while intended to enhance system security, inadvertently introduced new challenges for some users. Fortunately, the impact appears limited to older audio devices, as most contemporary devices utilize the more advanced USB Audio Class 2.0 standard or connect via Bluetooth.
Additional Fixes and Security Enhancements
Alongside the audio fix, this patch also addresses several security vulnerabilities. Notably, one vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-62721, could potentially allow a remote attacker to gain system-level privileges on an unpatched computer. Another issue, CVE-2026-85921, poses a risk of local privilege escalation, enabling unauthorized access to files and personal data.
Moreover, the update resolves a bug affecting Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services, which had been causing instability and login failures. Additionally, issues related to Microsoft’s Hyper-V virtual machine platform were addressed, particularly concerning applications that manage virtual machines and their interaction with Linux VMs using the Plan 9 operating system.
To install the update, users should navigate to Settings and select Windows Update. For those on Windows 11 26H2, the relevant update is labeled “2026-09 Security Update (KB5129195),” while users on versions 25H2 or 24H2 should look for “2026-09 Security Update (KB5129194).” If the update does not appear immediately, users can manually check for updates to ensure they receive the necessary fixes.
