Play Only While Parked
The primary restriction is tied directly to safety. Game content only runs while the vehicle is parked. This scenario is useful during long stops or while charging an electric vehicle. Once the car begins moving, the system automatically mutes the game audio, and it is impossible to restore sound while driving.
No Smartphone Required
Games run directly through the car’s infotainment screen. Users interact via the touchscreen, and some titles may support external controllers. Running the gaming platform requires a device or vehicle system running Android 15 or newer. Simply porting a mobile game is not enough: the project must be specifically adapted for the automotive interface. Before appearing on Google Play, these applications must also pass Google’s review process.
Automotive Display Challenges
Automotive displays differ significantly from smartphone and tablet screens, leading Google to impose additional requirements on game developers. Specifically, developers must adapt their interfaces to accommodate various screen sizes and aspect ratios. This is crucial for vehicles from different manufacturers, where multimedia systems can vary significantly in display geometry. Another mandatory requirement involves progress saving. Upon relaunching, the user must be able to resume the game from the exact point they left off.
With the end of beta testing, automotive games have moved from experiments to a standard part of the Android ecosystem. The future popularity of this format will depend on the growth of the catalog: now that Google has provided the platform, it is up to developers to populate it with suitable content.
