Among the recent wave of indie horror games, Iron Lung has captured the imagination of many, earning acclaim and even inspiring a film adaptation by popular content creator Markiplier. However, the genre of vehicular horror remains relatively unexplored, with only a handful of titles venturing into this chilling territory. While games like Barotrauma and job-based horrors such as Klekta and Shift at Midnight exist, they diverge significantly in tone and gameplay from David Szymanski’s 2022 masterpiece.
This is where The Temple piques interest, an upcoming total conversion mod for Half-Life 2 that invites players to navigate a terror-filled submarine. What sets this mod apart is its ambition to expand the horror experience beyond the ocean depths and into the vastness of space, utilizing multiple modes of transportation to heighten the suspense.
The Temple is part of MapLabs, a collection of maps derived from various Source engine modding competitions. The original version offered a brief experience of around 20 minutes, but the total conversion promises to enhance and extend the gameplay significantly. With the addition of a third map, players can expect over two hours of exploration-driven sci-fi horror.
A trailer for the mod showcases the three vehicles in action, revealing a visually impressive environment filled with monumental structures. The mod draws inspiration from classics like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, featuring invisible water monsters that lurk in the shadows, alongside a unique companion—a talking crow whose language players can comprehend, guiding them through the eerie journey.
While a specific release date for The Temple remains under wraps, its creator, known as Klems, has hinted at a launch “very soon, possibly next month.” The anticipation surrounding this mod reflects a growing interest in innovative horror experiences that push the boundaries of traditional gameplay.
